Washington University recognizes that generative AI is increasingly integrated into academic and professional work. Through initiatives such as WashU+AI, the university supports the thoughtful, responsible use of AI in teaching, learning, and research. 

In the graduate admissions process, however, applicants must ensure that all submitted materials accurately represent their own experiences, ideas, voice, and scholarly contributions. Personal statements, statements of purpose, writing samples, and all other application components should reflect the applicant’s authentic work and intellectual development. 

The use of generative AI to fabricate experiences, misrepresent research, or substantially generate or rewrite application materials in ways that obscure the applicant’s own thinking is inconsistent with the standards of academic integrity upheld by Arts & Sciences. 

Applicants are fully responsible for the accuracy and authenticity of their submissions. Applications found to contain misrepresented material or falsified content may be denied or rescinded.  Please check the departments webpage for additional additional information regarding the use of generative AI in its application process, outlining any relevant policies, restrictions, or recommendations that applicants should review before submitting their materials.
